"In a society where capital and commodities are seen as an extension of the self damage to property is clearly not interpersonal violence; yet it is a psychological violence (against the capitalist that owns it), in one form, and violence [against the flow of] capital in another. It is the workers taking the power to destroy fixed capital, yet it is also their own (estranged) crystalised, dead, labour being withdrawn from the control of the ruling class."

Me. Just finding notes scribbled into the margins of books I’ve been reading for my dissertation. I think this one was in the middle of a long bus journey. If I come across others that are interesting enough I may throw them up incase people want to comment or discuss their content.

This was while I was thinking about the dichotomy that the media declares smashing windows etc violence, yet ignores police bludgeoning people senseless. And while, rhetorically, smashing windows isn’t violence at the same time it really, really is.

Secret City: what is the City of London and who really has control over the finance industry in the UK?

London and the City of London are not the same place. London is a metropolis of 8 million people. The City of London is the famous square mile in the middle, with about 7,000 residents. A Corporation older than Parliament, the City of London has played a key historical role in protecting and promoting the interests of finance capital.

Secret City investigates the power wielded by the Corporation of London over British economic policy, through which it sustains London’s prime position at the hub of global finance capital — not least through control of the majority of the world’s tax havens.

The film exposes the Corporation’s anti-democratic constitution, the ancient laws which allow it function as a state within a state, and thus to promote an illusory promise of economic growth at the cost of the real economy.

“[I]n capitalist society we have a democracy that is curtailed, wretched, false, a democracy only for the rich, for the minority. The dictatorship of the proletariat, the period of transition to communism, will for the first time create democracy for the people, for the majority, along with the necessary suppression of the exploiters…”

"In its struggle for power the proletariat has no other weapon but organization. Disunited by the rule of anarchic competition in the bourgeois world, ground down by forced labor for capital, constantly thrust back to the “lower depths” of utter destitution, savagery, and degeneration, the proletariat can, and inevitably will, become an invincible force only through its ideological unification on the principles of Marxism being reinforced by the material unity of organization, which welds millions of toilers into an army of the working class."
